Santa Caterina Valfurva is the main location of the Stelvio National Park and has some of the highest peaks in the Lombard Alps. The Stelvio, the largest and one of the oldest italian historical parks, boasts an extraordinary landscape: its territory is about three quarters above 2000 meters, with the Ortles 3905 meters as the maximum height.
Located in the heart of the Central Alps, it includes valleys shaped by the action of the ice and waters that descend from the Ortles-Cevedale. The park's landscape is made up of majestic ridges, lush forests, green high mountain prairies furrowed by bubbling streams that flow from perennial glaciers. The morphological variety of the territory, due to the large height differences, allows the existence of large ecosystems with numerous rare species of animals and plants. Villages and farms, fascinating examples of rural and sacred architecture, scattered in the valley bottoms and on the mountain sides, are in balance with the surrounding environment.
