What is high mountain trekking and how to practice it safely

When we talk about High Mountain Trekking we are referring to that type of excursions, generally of high difficulty, designed to reach high peaks and isolated refuges. It can be a truly unique and stimulating experience, but to do it safely requires the right equipment and adequate preparation.

High mountain trekking is therefore very close to mountaineering, and represents the apotheosis of adventure and challenge for the expert hiker. This type of excursion takes place in high mountain environments, where the air is thinner, the challenges are greater but the views are decidedly more spectacular. Glaciers, snow-capped peaks, rocky paths and much more awaits the hiker who decides to overcome his limits and try to undertake such an adventure. In Santa Caterina Valfurva, there are many high mountain paths, of various difficulties and which offer always spectacular and unique experiences and landscapes.

  • Forni Glaciological Path
    • One of the most fascinating routes is the Forni Glaciological Path. This medium difficulty trek allows you to explore the Forni Glacier, one of the largest in the Italian Alps. The educational route, lasting approximately 4 hours and with a height difference of 400 metres, presents very technical, treacherous or difficult terrain. Specific equipment and previous experience are required.
  • Casati refuge
    • For more experienced trekkers, the excursion to Casati Refuge is an unmissable experience. Located at over 3,200 meters above sea level, the refuge offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. This route, lasting 6-7 hours with a difference in altitude of 1,200 metres, requires good physical preparation and good knowledge of the mountains.
  • Pizzini Refuge and Branca Refuge
    • Another popular itinerary is the one that connects the Pizzini Refuge to the Branca Refuge. This medium difficulty trek, lasting approximately 5-6 hours, allows you to admire spectacular views of the glaciers and mountains of the Stelvio National Park. The difference in altitude varies depending on the route chosen, offering options suited to different needs.
  • Tour of the Confinale
    • The Tour of the Confinale is a challenging circular route that allows you to explore the areas around Monte Confinale. With a duration of 8-10 hours and an altitude difference of more than 1,000 metres, this trek offers spectacular views of numerous glaciers and peaks. It is a challenge that requires preparation and endurance, but which pays off with unforgettable views.
  • V Alpini refuge
    • The excursion to V Alpini refuge is another adventure not to be missed. Located at 2,878 meters, the refuge offers spectacular views of Punta San Matteo. This trek, lasting 5-6 hours and with a difference in altitude of approximately 1,000 metres, is ideal for those looking for a challenging but rewarding excursion.

Tips for Safe Trekking

  • Preparation: Make sure you have adequate physical and mental preparation to tackle high mountain routes. Study the route centimeter by centimeter in advance: surfaces, types of road and altitude.
  • Equipment: Bring the necessary equipment with you, including technical clothing, trekking shoes, map, compass, and a sufficient supply of water and food.
  • Weather: Always check the weather forecast before leaving and be prepared to face variable weather conditions, typical of the high mountains.
  • Guides: Consider the option of being accompanied by an expert mountain guide, especially for the more challenging routes.
